Pictured is a present day baby box or foundling wheel where people can bring unwanted babies and donate them anonymously. Created in response to the dangerous and often fatal method of abandoning new born infants outside churches, baby hatches offer a much safer alternative. The first foundling wheels appeared in Italy in AD1198 after a decree by Pope Innocent III.
